Day 6 - Tianjin: Forever Family Day!!!!

I know, you've all been waiting.....

We have Micah. We’re Mama and Baba. No going back. Wow.

We got up early for breakfast today. There was a nice combination of bacon, pastries and congee. The hotel we are staying in is really nice and the hotel staff are extremely courteous, but very little English is spoken here and most requests need to go through one person that has to be summoned to help out. We all met at 0900 to go to the orphanage.

We had a very smooth transition at the orphanage - not one tear was shed by any of the babies. Our guide, Wendy, said that she has seen only about 10% go this smoothly. We had a great afternoon, including a nap and play time. We are now making up for that by having a really tough time getting to sleep. This is becoming a tough time for Micah to settle down. All of our attempts at making bed time a reality have failed so far, and we are very tired. We'll post more later, but for now need to concentrate on getting Micah to sleep. Any suggestions?

Here are a couple more pictures to hold you over!

Karen and Bruce and of course Micah,
The joy in our hearts is overwhelming. Only Sheridan slept last night around our house.

Now to your question, here is what worked for Magoo. We turned off the lights and the TV and stayed quiet. I worked on the computer but the screen was away from him. We comforted him every few minutes and this allowed him to sleep.

We also kept the crib close to the bed and Kim was laying on the bed where he could see her. All children are different, but this is what worked for us.

Congratulation Mama and Baba. We can't wait for more updates.

OK, now that I have stopped crying happy tears, I can write. Could your smiles be any BIGGER? So glad the transition has gone well so far. Micah is beautiful and you both look so happy. Try some music for Micah - it might help him settle down. Also, if the lights are off, try some on or vice versus. Keep us posted and try to get a little bit of rest. We love you so much.

Congratulations! Micah is adorable! I know how you're feeling right now..."head first into first time parenthood to a toddler in a hotel room". Nothing quite like it and a million emotions all at once.

Do you have any soft music with you? Ipod or on your laptop? We turned off all but one or two lamps, put on soft music (we had some chinese lullabies, but any soft music worked)and sit with him on the bed and do some "quiet" games like stacking cups or books...or "Where's Micah?, Where's Mama/Baba" with a towel or blanket (also how Ian learned his name in less than a day). Just cuddling in the dim room is good...

Ian was fearful of the crib we got from the hotel, so his first few nights were with us... but he settled down and slept great in the crib in Guangzhou...It will get better. I promise. It will! Congrats again and go get some sleep if you can. It's late! :-)

Congrats!!!!
He'll eventually go to sleep; really he will. He may need to snuggle with you in bed with the lights out. Remember it's DAY 1 and everything is new to Micah and his parents :)
Congrats!!!

He is so handsome! Congratulations Mama & Baba! Your smiles say it all.

As for getting him to sleep - the thing that worked best for us was a warm bath, then laying down with her and holding her close and kinda rocking her. She resisted for a few minutes, but soon she was fast asleep. Good luck!

We are all so happy for you! Micah is just adorable. Sleeping? Boy, with each child we had different challenges but found that if I lay down with each of them--touching them--it was much, much easier for them to let go. Remember, he might be afraid that if he goes to sleep you might be gone....Good luck!

Congratulations! You guys look great as mama and daddy! One thing you may try is to stay low for a few days and just one of you go out for supplies etc. while the other one just stays in with Micah. He could be so overstimulated that just getting him on a good routine, almost like a newborn would work very well. Eat, play and then try to lay down and rest or just hangout together. Getting him out may seem to tire him out, but giving him so much all at once may be why he is restless at night. We look forward to seeing some pictures, we will try to call you guys at the hotel in the next few days. Love Dan, Susan, Grace and MiMi (and Hope)
